Steven Universe, the title character from Cartoon Network‘s breakout animated series, has faced some bizarre and unusual things as a member of the Crystal Gems alongside Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl. However, nothing can prepare him for the insanity and antics that will take place when he gets some help the star of Cartoon Network’s other popular self-titled animated series, “Uncle Grandpa,” in a crossover episode that brings the two series together for the first time ever. Zach Callison, the voice of Steven Universe, sat down with Dennis on March 31 to talk about the all-new episode that features these two parallel characters.

Dennis: Tell us a little bit about the SU/UG crossover episode, “Say Uncle.”

Zach: It’s going to be a ton of fun to watch! It’s our little April Fools special that brings Uncle Grandpa into an episode of “Steven Universe.” We had an absolute blast recording it, it was one of my favorite Steven sessions of all time.

Dennis: What was it like getting to work with “Uncle Grandpa” creator and voice actor, Peter Browngardt?

Zach: Pete is awesome! He’s a really creative guy who is also very talented with the voice of UG, and it was really fun to record with him. We’ve since crossed paths quite a few times over at Cartoon Network.

Dennis: Some Universe fans are a bit skeptical about this crossover episode. What would you say to them to persuade them to tune in?

Zach: New is scary, but remember that this episode is all for fun! We wanted to do something wacky and unexpected for April Fools, which this episode certainly lives up to. We loved creating it, so I hope that comes through when the fans watch it.

Dennis: If you could pick one other Cartoon Network series to do another crossover with “Steven Universe,” which would you pick and why?

Zach: Oh man…so many choices. I’ll give it my top 3 in no particular order. “Regular Show” is a long-time favorite, I feel like Steven would get right along with Mordecai and Rigby. “Adventure Time” would also be fun from a session standpoint, as I’ve become friends with many of the voices on that show in real life. Also, as a throwback, “Codename: Kids Next Door” was always my favorite CN show as a kid, so I’m obliged to put it here!

Dennis: Why should fans, either of “Steven Universe” or “Uncle Grandpa” tune in to catch “Say Uncle?”

Zach: It’s something off the wall and different! Crossovers are not something you see every day, which is why we were so excited to have the opportunity to do one, especially with a zany and hilarious show like UG. As I said, the recording session for this episode was one of the most fun from our run so far, which puts this episode in a special place in my heart.

You can catch Zach as Steven Universe when he meets Uncle Grandpa for the first time in “Say Uncle,” which premieres April 2 at 5:30 p.m. EST on Cartoon Network.
